Host a Duello Armizare Instructor Intensive

Bring the Level 1 Intensive to your region. Connect your community to an internationally recognized certification pathway.

Duello Armizare Level 1 Instructor Intensives can be hosted by established schools, HEMA clubs, martial arts organizations, and study groups that want to bring the system to their region. As a host, you organize the local logistics. Devon Boorman and the Duello Armizare team provide the instruction, curriculum, and certification authority.

This page explains what the intensive involves, what you and the Duello Armizare team are each responsible for, and what you need to have in place before applying. Please read it in full before submitting an application.

The Format

What Is a Hosted Intensive?

A Hosted Intensive is a structured, multi-day educational event organized by an external school or organization, where Devon Boorman and the Duello Armizare team provide the primary instructional content.

It is not a seminar or a guest instructor visit. A Hosted Intensive is a full week of immersive training: 50 hours over 5 days, with formal financial arrangements, insurance requirements, venue standards, and a direct link to the Duello Armizare certification pathway.

The host's role is to organize the event locally: secure the venue, manage participant registration and payments, arrange accommodation and transport for the visiting instructor, and handle all local logistics and legal compliance. The Duello Armizare team, led by Devon Boorman, provides the teaching, the curriculum, the training structure, and the certification authority. The sections below break down exactly what each side is responsible for.

The Week

What the Intensive Looks Like

All official Duello Armizare Level 1 Intensives follow the same core structure, regardless of location. Hosts should understand this format clearly before committing to organize the event.

5 Days. 50 Hours.

Each day runs from 8:00am to 6:00pm, with two 30-minute breaks. The intensive integrates three training blocks: rapier, longsword, and instruction and learning methodology.

Daily Schedule

  • 8:00am – 11:30amRapier
  • 11:30am – 12:00pmBreak
  • 12:00pm – 3:30pmLongsword
  • 3:30pm – 4:00pmBreak
  • 4:00pm – 6:00pmInstruction & Learning Methodology

The methodology session is included for all participants.

How the Week Develops

  • Day 1Structure and Foundations
  • Day 2Control and Response
  • Day 3Tactical Framework
  • Day 4Close Play and Grappling
  • Day 5Integration and Next Steps

The final day may follow a slightly different program depending on the group's needs. Elective topics and an optional mid-week group dinner may be arranged.

Who Attends

No formal prerequisites are required. Past intensives have included students with less than one year of experience alongside practitioners with more than 20 years, and both were fully challenged and supported. The small cohort format allows for individualized attention throughout the week.

The intensive is designed for future instructors, study group leaders, serious practitioners, and experienced martial artists from other systems looking for a structured entry into European swordsmanship.

What the Host Is Responsible For

As host, your responsibility is everything that makes the event possible locally. The Duello Armizare team focuses on teaching and certification. You focus on operations.

Host responsibilities include:

  • Securing a suitable venue that meets Duello Armizare's published requirements
  • Arranging private accommodation for the visiting instructor, close to the venue
  • Handling local transport for the visiting instructor throughout the event
  • Managing all participant registration and payment collection
  • Handling standard refund requests from participants
  • Obtaining adequate event insurance, naming Devon Boorman and Duello Armizare as additional insured parties where possible
  • Ensuring all participants sign the required liability waiver before training begins
  • All local participant communication before, during, and after the event
  • Compliance with all applicable local laws, permits, and safety regulations
  • Incident response and emergency management during the event

Note on financial risk

The host assumes the financial risk of the event. The Duello Armizare team does not cover the host's operating losses. Both parties share in the revenue after direct costs, and both share in the risk of insufficient enrollment.

The Space

Venue Requirements

The Duello Armizare team reviews and approves every venue before an event is confirmed. The following are minimum requirements. A venue that does not meet these standards cannot be approved.

2,000 sq ft

Minimum clear, unobstructed training area (floor space).

10 ft

Minimum ceiling height across the training area.

Non-slip floor

Safe, non-slip flooring appropriate for footwork and grappling.

Full capacity

Suitable for the expected number of participants plus active training space.

All-week access

Reliable access for all days of the event, including setup time before Day 1.

When you submit your application, you will provide the venue name, address, dimensions, and photos. The Duello Armizare team reviews this information before confirming the event.

The Gear

Equipment Requirements

The host is responsible for ensuring appropriate training equipment is available for participants. Some participants bring their own gear; others may require loaner equipment.

What the host must have available

  • Rapiers (sufficient for the group)
  • Longswords (sufficient for the group)
  • Fencing masks
  • Gloves
  • Gorgets (throat protectors)
  • Protective jackets
  • Loaner gear for participants who do not have their own

What participants are asked to bring

  • Comfortable workout clothing
  • Non-marking shoes
  • Gloves and fencing mask (if they own them)
  • Throat protector (if they own one)
  • Practice swords for their disciplines (if they own them)

Participants without their own mask or throat protector should contact the host in advance to confirm loaner equipment availability.

Non-Negotiable

Safety Standards

The following safety standards apply to every Duello Armizare Hosted Intensive. They are non-negotiable.

  • The training space must meet the minimum venue dimensions listed above
  • Participants must sign a liability waiver before training begins (template provided by Academie Duello)
  • The host is responsible for incident response and emergency procedures during the event
  • Devon may ask the host to remove a participant who poses a danger to others or who persistently refuses to engage meaningfully with the training
  • All participants and the venue must be covered by adequate event insurance

There are no formal prerequisites for participation. The host is responsible for managing participant registration and communicating any relevant logistical requirements to registrants before the event begins.

The Model

Financial Structure

Hosted Intensives operate on a revenue-sharing model. Below is how it works. Exact figures are confirmed in the financial schedule attached to the agreement. This page gives you the general model so you can assess viability before applying.

Revenue split after direct costs

Revenue is split between the Duello Armizare team and the host after direct costs are deducted. Direct costs that may be deducted before the split include:

  • Venue rental
  • Required event insurance
  • Travel (flights) for the visiting instructor, reimbursed from direct costs
  • Payment processing fees
  • Pre-approved advertising expenses
  • Pre-approved equipment rental or purchase
  • Refunds and chargebacks

What remains after direct costs is split. The host retains a portion; the Duello Armizare team receives a portion. The exact split is agreed in writing before the event.

Go / no-go threshold

Every event has a minimum enrollment threshold. If the minimum number of confirmed paid participants is not reached by the go/no-go date, both parties discuss cancellation or rescheduling. The Duello Armizare team does not normally proceed with fewer than 6 confirmed paid participants.

Financial risk

The host assumes the financial risk of local operations. The Duello Armizare team does not cover the host's losses if the event fails to meet projections.

Payment

The host collects all participant registration fees. Final reconciliation and payment to the Duello Armizare team occurs within 14 days after the event.

Important

This page gives you the model. It does not guarantee any specific financial outcome. No profit is promised or implied.

The Pathway

Certification: What Can and Cannot Be Promised

Attendance at a Hosted Intensive does not automatically guarantee certification. Certification authority rests exclusively with Devon Boorman and the Duello Armizare team.

Hosts may not promise automatic certification in any promotional or participant-facing materials.

What participants can pursue after the intensive

After completing the 5-day program, participants who wish to certify as Apprentice Instructors complete a series of four post-course reviews covering theory and teaching methodology. These are released after the intensive and typically take 20–40 minutes each to complete. Candidates then complete a practical demonstration. Successful candidates may earn:

  • Apprentice rank in rapier and/or longsword (Green Cord)
  • Level 1 Instructor status, with the ability to lead a Duello Armizare study group
  • The ability to certify students at the Apprentice / Green Cord level

All assessment and certification decisions are made by Devon Boorman and the Duello Armizare team.

What you can say in your promotional materials

“This intensive is the entry point to the Duello Armizare certification pathway. Participants who complete the post-course assessment process may earn Apprentice rank and Level 1 Instructor status. Attendance does not automatically guarantee certification.”

The Duello Armizare team provides approved promotional language in the Communication Package delivered after signing.
